Confederate Captives: From Mobile Bay to the "Hellmira" Prison Camp
This presentation will be about the history of Fort Morgan, Alabama focusing on its construction and then ultimately the battles fought there. It will shift over to the more controversial subject - prison camps. The garrison of Fort Morgan surrendered in august 1864 after a series of infamous events that resulted in the suspension of the dix-hill prisoner exchange cartel. Because of the suspension, the garrison of Fort Morgan was taken to Camp Rathbun in Elmira, New York and the men were held there as prisoners of war until the end of the conflict. During that time (a mere six months), more than half of them died as a result of disease and exposure. That is a dramatically higher casualty rate than the confederate garrison of Fort Morgan experienced in combat. This presentation explores the ways that confederate soldiers experienced captivity in camps during the closing months of the civil war.
