Strategic aspects of the Red River Campaign
Mark returns to visit with us again, this time to discuss the strategic aspects of the Red River Campaign. Mark's last assignment for the Army was as an Assistant Professor of Military Science at Fordham University. Mark's first book, Military Lessons of the Civil War, introduces the reader to the U.S. Army's Nine Principles of War. These principles are taught to its combat arms officers for operational planning and analysis. In his book, Mark uses the Red River Campaign in the chapter discussing the Principle of Simplicity to illustrate a violation of the principle. Mark's power point presentation to the Round Table will highlight the unusual circumstances and reasons for General Halleck's orders to General Banks to conduct a hasty campaign against Texas, before turning towards Mobile for a campaign intended to support Sherman's advance on Atlanta.
