The War Between the Giants Part 1 (of 3), What the Railroads Bring (1861-62)
There is a rich Civil War history in North Mississippi. Raids, expeditions and bloody battles occurred continuously in the region for nearly three full years during the War. While some of these events are better known than others, even the well-read Civil War enthusiast tends to overlook the actions in North Mississippi due to its secondary role and proximity to the massively consequential events which took place north of the region at Shiloh in 1862, and south of the region at Vicksburg in 1863.
This first program will examine the early years of the War and the vast amount of military activity in North Mississippi during that time. Massive armies, violent clashes, and interesting human interest stories will be explored with the main focus being on the very busy year of 1862. |
