Over the years Dick Nicholas, grandson of a Confederate veteran, has developed a passionate interest and respect for Robert E. Lee, not only for the recognition that Lee has received as the most revered, beloved, and famous of all American soldiers and his legendary generalship in the Civil War, but also for his inspirational leadership after the war. After Appomattox Lee spent t remaining years of his life urging the people of the Confederacy to accept defeat, avoid controversy, and to rebuild the stricken South. Lee’s post-war career as one the nation’s foremost educators and leaders in the reconciliation and reunification of the nation has been largely ignored by historians. His accomplishments as President of Washington College and his contributions to the restoration of the stricken South from the war’s destruction are the subject of this talk. In defeat a great man became a greater man, and Nicholas suggests that his achievements after the war represented his finest hour. The people of the South followed him in war; in peace they looked to him as their inspirational leader and role model. |
Nicholas, a native of Virginia, now lives in Baton Rouge. He retired from Shell Oil Company as Chief Geologist a number of years ago. Since his retirement, he has focused his attention on the Civil War with emphasis on Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia and the influence of geology on battlefields. He has authored several books in the Virginia Regimental Histories Series and published histories of Sheridan’s James River Campaign in Central Virginia and other local Civil War events. Additional activities include lectures to Civil War Roundtables and historical organizations on various subjects relating to the war and local history.
