Baton Rouge Civil War Round Table Presents:
Joe Ricci - The Battle of Franklin:The Ground Itself Cried for Mercy
August 16, 2019
Joseph, an undergraduate student at Southeastern Louisiana University, is studying history focusing on American Military History from 1776 to 1865 specializing in the Western Theater of the Civil War. He has worked at Confederate Memorial Hall in New Orleans for the last eight years and currently serves as an assistant curator. He has been nominated by the History and Political Science Department to participate in the 2018 Undergraduate Research Summit and has been a featured speaker at Southeastern, Memorial Hall, and various Round Table groups.
Joseph is currently in the process of completing a narrative on the Battle of Franklin (which he hopes to have completed in the next two years) and conducting further research in various aspects of the Tennessee Campaign of 1864.
Joseph has spent the last four years reading, researching, and writing about the Tennessee Campaign of 1864, having made multiple trips to Franklin, Tennessee. In the last thirty years have historians turned their focus to the West to a battle larger than Gettysburg. It stands alone in the entirety of the Western Theatre of the war as the single, cataclysmic event that effectively ruined the fighting capacity of the Western Confederacy. In just five hours nearly 8,000 men, blue and gray alike, would perish in the fields surrounding the small farming town of Franklin, Tennessee. Franklin is a story of desperation and disaster. It is also a story of heroism, dedication to duty, and unparalleled honor.
