The 1862 Maryland campaign is an enthralling narrative filled with spectacle, adversity, and intrigue from beginning to end. The subject is also compelling because it contains one long list of "what-if" scenarios that seriously vex even the most informed experts. The question we will ask is, do we really know who won? The question of who won the Maryland Campaign and the Battle of Antietam would, on its face, seem to be a straightforward and basic one. However, as with most subjects in the American Civil War, appearances can be deceiving. It involves a more in-depth understanding of the historical journey of the two central characters in the campaign - Robert E. Lee and George B. McClellan - and how we now perceive these men, their decisions, and their reputations in the broader context of history. University of Tennessee Press, author of Decisions at Antietam and Decisions of the Maryland Campaign, Michael Lang, will present a unique and interesting perspective on this watershed event of the war.
Michael Lang has worked as a manager for FedEx for 35 years and is also a successful photographer. Originally from Colorado, Michael moved to Frisco, Texas, in 2017. Like many of you, Michael has been a fan of all history since a young boy and has been a student of the Civil war for just as long. With two published books on the Civil War already complete, Michael is currently working on two other manuscripts, including Decisions of the Red River Campaign. |
