The Baton Rouge Civil War Round Table Presents:
Dr. Samantha Cavell
September 20, 2018

“A Ship’s a Fool to Fight a Fort”: Farragut takes on the Forts in the Campaign for New Orleans

Admiral David G. Farragut faced one of his greatest challenges in overcoming the efforts of Confederate defenders at Forts Jackson and St. Philip, and the River Defense Force, in his campaign to capture New Orleans in 1862. This paper explores Farragut’s operational approach and his responses to myriad challenges, which allowed him to capture and control the most important port city in the Confederacy. Farragut proved that a naval force, independent of military support, was capable of a decisive victory, one which made a vital contribution to the Federal war effort.
