“Camp Ford, Texas and the Union Prisoner of War Experience.”
This discussion includes the history and development of the Confederate Prisoner of War Camps established early in 1863. These camps remained active until the end of the War of the Rebellion in 1865. Working for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department as an Interpretive Specialist at the Big Bend Ranch State Park near Presidio, Texas he was oversaw the interpretive programs of three different sites within the Big Bend Ranch State Park complex. After completing an internship with the National Park Service at Fort Scott National Historic Site in Fort Scott, Kansas he provided programs on the Mexican-American War, Bloody Kansas, and Kansas in the Civil War. Mr. Steinback became an Interpretive Ranger at Port Hudson State Historic Site in October 2012. Marvin earned a Bachelor’s Degree at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, New Mexico majoring in History and minored in Anthropology. He earned a Master’s Degree in History with an emphasis on Public History from New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Marvin is a Civil War re-enactor and has participated with the 4th Texas Mounted Volunteers, 8th Texas Cavalry, 9th and 17th Texas Infantry, 114th New York Infantry, as a member of the Rio Grande Flotilla of the United States Marine Corps. He has presented and worked in historical societies, archive centers, and museums.
