The War Between the Giants Part 3 (of 3), "Hammer Strikes, Hard War, and the last Raids into North Mississippi" (July 1864-May 1865)
November 21, 2024
There is a rich Civil War history in North Mississippi. Raids, expeditions and bloody battles occurred continuously in the region for nearly three full years during the War. While some of these events are better known than others, even the well-read Civil War enthusiast tends to overlook the actions in North Mississippi due to its perceived secondary role and proximity to the massively consequential events which took place north of the region at Shiloh in 1862, and south of the region at Vicksburg in 1863.
This final chapter in the three part series will examine the time period from July 1864 through the end of the War in 1865 by focusing on the last expeditions and raids into North Mississippi. Inseparable ties between the region and the critical Atlanta Campaign, one last major battle, a policy of destruction, and compelling human interest stories will be explored. The redemption of Union Cavalryman Benjamin Grierson after a difficult first half of 1864 and some of the last daring rides of Nathan Bedford Forrest will be highlighted. |
Graham is the President of the Brice's Crossroads Foundation and works in various capacities for the National Park Service. He served on the Board of Directors for the Mississippi's Final Stands Civil War Interpretive Center, and since 2018 has given battlefield tours and programs at multiple Civil War sites in North Mississippi.
He was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, and is a proud Marine Corps veteran. He earned a B.A. in History and his Jurid Doctor. In the recent past, Graham has lived nearly on top of the old Union siege lines close to the entrance of the Vicksburg National Military Park, and for two years he made his home right at the center of the historic Brice’s Crossroads National Battlefield.
He has been a guest lecturer at the Vicksburg National Military Park Winter Lecture Series, and a speaker at multiple Roundtables and other organizations. He currently resides in Oxford, MS where he is putting the finishing touches on his first book: "The Hard Luck First: The Forgotten History of the 1st Mississippi Infantry Regiment, C.S.A., 1861-1865".
