“Hardships of a Soldier’s Lot,” a quotation from one of their letters that I edited for the LSU Press. Briefly, I was born and raised in Tangipahoa Parish, received a BA in history from LSU in 1969, served as an intelligence office in the US Air Force, returned to LSU for a master’s degree after a tour in Vietnam, and then moved on to the University of Texas for a PhD, which I received in 1980. Spent most of my career as a professor of history and American studies at Arizona State University, and have published several books on the American South—predominately the Civil War era. Now retired to Texarkana where my wife is the president of Texas A&M University—Texarkana and I am living the life of a trophy husband.
