The Baton Rouge Civil War Round Table
Presents: Ronnie Harris The Battle of Baton Rouge: "The Battle of Baton Rouge: The Players and Places, before and after" Ronnie Harris, a member of the Baton Rouge Civil War Roundtable since 2022, will be our speaker for the Baton Rouge Civil War Round Table meeting on Thursday, August 15, 2024, in commemoration of the 162nd anniversary of the Battle of Baton Rouge. Ronnie Harris, originally from Gretna, Louisiana, served as its mayor for 28 years from 1985 to 2013. He became a resident of Baton Rouge when he was named Executive Director of the Louisiana Municipal Association, a non-profit organization serving the needs of Louisiana’s 303 cities, towns, and villages. Now retired, he keeps busy with family estate obligations, serves as President of the Goodwood Property Owners Association and, in his spare time, he performs research in local history that is relevant to him. |
August 5th, 2024, marks the 162nd Anniversary of the Battle of Baton Rouge, which has widely been considered a minor battle, however, as one of the first Deep South confrontations between Confederate and Union forces, it had significant implications in timeline and strategies of the Civil War. His talk will include the events that led up to the battle, its combatants, and the civilians that were to witness the horrors of war in Louisiana. His presentation will display photographs of the past of where important events of the battle took place and what exists there in the present day.
