“No Biting the Bullet: Anesthesia and the Civil War”
With vast numbers of casualties requiring surgery as a result of Civil War battles the relatively new technology of general anesthesia was put to the ultimate test. Although the administration of anesthetics was far from precise, their widespread use allowed life-saving surgeries to be performed without additional pain and trauma to the patient. This presentation focuses on the development of anesthesia, its use in field and general hospitals, and ways in which war furthered innovation in military surgery.
Dr. Cavell is the Visiting Assistant Professor in Military History at Southeastern Louisiana University. She received her PhD in naval and maritime history from the University of Exeter in the UK where she received the Exeter Research Fellowship.
