Dr. Sam Cavell

October 20, 2022

“No Biting the Bullet: Anesthesia and the Civil War”
Picture
With vast numbers of casualties requiring surgery as a result of Civil War battles the relatively new technology of general anesthesia was put to the ultimate test. Although the administration of anesthetics was far from precise, their widespread use allowed life-saving surgeries to be performed without additional pain and trauma to the patient. This presentation focuses on the development of anesthesia, its use in field and general hospitals, and ways in which war furthered innovation in military surgery.

Dr. Cavell is the Visiting Assistant Professor in Military History at Southeastern Louisiana University. She received her PhD in naval and maritime history from the University of Exeter in the UK where she received the Exeter Research Fellowship. She has been a guest lecturer at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich in the UK, Oxford University, and the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. Her publications include Midshipmen and Quarterdeck Boys in the British Navy, and chapter contributions to The Battle of New Orleans Reconsidered, Yankees in Nelson’s Navy, and Naval History and Biography in Film. Sam is a member of the Historian General’s Committee of the Naval Order of the United States and is currently working on a book about Admiral Sir Alexander Cochrane RN and his campaigns from Bladensburg to New Orleans in the War of 1812.
